Elizabeth and I took a quick trip over to our favorite antique consignment shop yesterday.
Through the Garden Gate
was having a 4th of July sale.
I found this ~
My garden is surviving the 100 degree temps and storms. To my absolute joy, all my plants remain alive.
Meanwhile I'm reading this ~
I know you all saw the movie last year, but since I'm a book reader rather than a movie goer, I've only just gotten to it.
I cannot put it down. It moves me, infuriates me, makes me happy. If you saw the movie, what did you think? Did you grow up in the 60s in the south like I did?
It was an eye-opening era for us, and I'm glad to have been a part of the positive changes that happened back in that day.
Hugs ~ Mary
I'm sharing at:

Love the bell with the butterfly !
ReplyDeleteI've bought the book too but haven't read it yet...
Hug from Portugal.

I read the book last year. I agree...it's moving. Haven't seen the movie. I really like sticking with a book, rather than the movie version. The only ones that stay true are the Harry Potter movies.
ReplyDeleteGlad your plants are surviving!
Hugs,
Courtney
Good morning, I read the book before I saw the movie. As almost always the book is MUCH better! I was so surprised how LOL funny the book was. I thought it would be just all terrible, heart wrenching stuff but it was so balanced by these wonderful women. Angela
ReplyDeleteMorning, Mary! Oh, I love your new little hanging thingy! Don't you just love sales. Glad your plants are thriving. I'm trying hard to keep my things alive too.
ReplyDeleteOh, I know you're loving "The Help". I sure did. I read the book first and then I saw the movie. The movie is good but of course the book is so much better. Yes, I was born and grew up in the deep south - Alabama - and although we didn't have 'help' in our home, my mother did take our clothes to a black lady who washed, starced and ironed them. She was gracious. But I saw enough in my little town and witnessed so much prejudice. Even at a young age I just knew this was wrong.
Thanks for popping in and be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Hi Mary, Glad your garden is surviving well! Mine is kinda droopy. I only saw the movie last week, because I wanted to wait until I finished the book, which was wonderful. A real eye-opener for sure! Filled with sadness and prejudice, but also humor, warmth, and thankfully hope. Loved it and will read it again someday.
ReplyDeleteI read the book and then saw the movie . I loved it ! I didn't live in the south during the 50s and 60s but I had relatives there and visited often . I saw the attitude. My parents were from the south but my mother always told us that people were people, it didn't matter what color they were ,they all deserved respect and should be treated the same . My daughter gave me a copy of the movie for Christmas so I have seen it several times.
ReplyDeleteMary, we watched the movie "The Help" last year and just recently watched
ReplyDelete"The Long Walk Home". I think that watching these movies is such a teachable moment for our kids so that they can see what life was like and how unfairly people were treated. It causes me to stop and think about the way that I treat others who are not like me. We also watched "Hotel Rwanda". I know that I so often get caught up in my own little world and fail to realize that such injustice is all around.
Love your sweet find:) I haven't seen the movie or read the book BUT I plan on it! Glad you are giving it a good rating! I was born in 1954 so yes to growing up in the 60s! Have a blessed evening, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteI love your sweet find. I did read the book first and then watched the movie.
ReplyDeleteI thought they did a great job with the movie it would be worth renting.

My daughter and I both read the book, then we talked about what it was like (for me) growing up in the 60's. We had a black housekeeper/babysitter who I was too young to remember. I do remember my aunt's housekeeper, Pauline, who wore a uniform. Her husband did the yard work. (His name was William, I believe. I've been trying to remember it ever since I read your post.) I'm glad those days are over. Separate was NEVER equal.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary, Yes, I grew up in the South during the 60's and I loved the book and the movie. No matter how much I water my plants they are slowly dying from this heat! Thanks for sharing this at the Open House Party and have a great week.
