Lighting the House

Is y'all's house as dark as mine? My house has 20 windows and two sets of French doors ... not to mention a front door with glass in the top ... and in spite of all that, this place is just dark!

I reckon part of it is the windows, being tall but narrow. Once you put blinds on them (I'm kind of into privacy here in the burbs), you get even less light.

Add the ton of trees the previous owner so graciously planted right up against the house 30 years ago, and you get darkness.

Last winter we decided to save money. We kept the lights
off during the day. Can I just tell you something? It was dreary. And depressing. Something I do. not. need.

Well, we're not doing that again, I'm turning the lights on every day because leaving them off did not save us one penny on the electric bill. Not one. Nothing.

And just to be sure, I've stocked up on lamps.
I've shopped yard sales and thrift stores,
and now I've got lots of lamps.
Floor lamps, table lamps, lamps with nice shades, lamps without ...

I've done what I had to do to spice things up -
added fabric, adding dangling things,
whatever it takes.

How's the lighting situation over at your house? What kind of light do you have - natural or store bought?

Tell me about your light.

  1. We get tons of light, our windows are all huge, but I don't like a dark house either. If the sun isn't shining really bright, then I turn the lights on. Love all of your pretty lamps. Hugs, Marty

  2. We have lots of windows but so many trees. Less after the storm, hah. SOmetimes it can be bright and then darkness. I use lams during the day just because I like to glow. I don't use many curtains because I don't need to have them for privacy. I really don't like overhead lighting.....so lamps are my route as well.

  3. My house tends to be dark too. On the back side, at least, where we live!! I have mood lights all over the house.
I thought your previous post on adult kids at home was so sweet. We have taken back our youngest son one time, and now we have our middle daughter and her son....my grandson, here for a time while she saves to buy a house. I don't mind at all. Maybe one day, they will be willing take care of us in our time of need.
    Hugs,
    Kris

  4. I guess 220 years ago, they had to have natural light. I have TONS of natural light and out here in the country, I don't need privacy. I don't even have any curtains! I don't think I want any, either!

  5. I agree about the need for light... I love natural light, but sadly our kitchen and dining room just don't get nearly enough. Those are the two rooms I spend the most time in! Frustrating.

  6. Hi Mary! Your house sounds like mine. I've got lots of windows but our house faces the morning sun but we have huge oak trees (which I love) in our front yard. They shade the front windows. My house is on the dark side and that's one of the main things I don't like about my house. But, like you, I have lights on all day! Lights up my life! ;) I love all your pretty lamps and the sweet spots you've put them. Did you recover those pretty shades with the florals? I love those.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  7. Our home has no overhead lights....and I wish it did. Our bedroom especially is dark....which I guess is ok since we sleep in there...but during the day, I still wish it was lighter. I have another lamp to use in there...but there is no place to put it!!!

  10. I know exactly how you feel. Our house is pretty dark, and I'm always turning on lights. Have you tried those new bulbs? I strongly dislike them. They don't put out enough light at all.
