Saving for a Camera

Elizabeth and I are saving our pennies - we each want a new camera.

Elizabeth cleans house for me twice a month and earns good money for it - but much less than I'd have to pay a service. She is such a help since my arthritis makes it painful and difficult to complete these tasks.

So she is saving quickly for her camera.

I've let the kids use my little Kodak Easy Share point and shoot
(the only camera we have so far). They're good at finding awesome shots. Matthew will get the Kodak when I get my new camera.

I save all the change Mr. Redo and I come up with daily -
you'd be surprised how fast it adds up!

Elizabeth and I talked about starting a homeschoolers' photography club. I posted this idea to my Yahoo homeschool group
and heard from six families who are interested - one offered to ask her daughter's previous photography teacher about giving
us some short simple lessons - how fun!

Meanwhile, I'd like any input on a camera that:

1. Takes great, clear, sharp pictures.
2. Works in low-light.
3. Doesn't require a rocket science degree to operate.
4. Reasonably light weight.

We'll see who saves enough money to buy the first camera - Elizabeth or me. It's a strong race to the camera store!

Hugs ~ Mary

  1. Hi Mary, I still have my Kodak Easy Share but it does frustrate me a little. I just had to spring for a new laptop, old one died completely yesterday. Still working on little quirks, etc. I know some bloggers love their shiny red Kodak, but not sure if it is a huge leap from Easy Share? xo

  2. Well Mary.. if all of that cash from the envelope is Elizabeth's..I think she is going to beat you to the camera department..lol..I don't know much about cameras..that's why I use an Easy Share myself..Good Luck Ladies!!

  3. Hi Mary! I agree some of these great cameras cost bunches. Now my hubby bought me a new Canon 3Ti and I love it. I'm still learning to use it. It was pricey around $800 - $900! I din't feel worthy! It is heavy and rather large and hard to carry around in my purse so I still take my little point and shoot pink Olympus FE-340 8 megapixels. I think it was a little over $100 a few years back. It's probably cheaper by now. I'm really pleased with the quality of pix it takes and I did learn to work it. Good luck!!
Thanks always for popping in to see me.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  4. I bought the cheapest rebel at Target on sale. I think it was around $400. Works for me. I don't take the best shots but I don't have time to do all that editing either so I just load right onto the blog from the camera.

  6. I recently got a Nikon D5100, and it has been a very nice choice. It's lightweight(I have a Nikon D200 also, which is more of a pro body, and much heavier. I LOVE the D200, but it isn't great in low light.) The 5100 does great in low light and gets nice, sharp shots. It's been very reliable. (The Canon T3i is comparable. I have a Nikon flash and lenses, so I went with the Nikon.) Hope this helps! So nice to find your blog at Sweet Tea and Simplicity. I'm a new follower.

  8. The majority of my pictures have been taken with a Nikon D60. If you are looking for a DSLR and just getting started with it, I'd highly recommend tha one. My current camere is a Nikcon D7000. Just bought it about a month ago, so I'm still on the learning curve myself.

If you are looking for something more affordable, my mom has a Sanyo that my brother bought her on sale at Wal-Mart for $80. I'm not sure of the exact camera, but if you are interested, I can ask her what it is. Some of my pictures have been taken with it too. For a point and shoot and carry around camera, I like it.

Although I've never used one, I know several people who own and really like a Sony Cybershot.

Good luck on picking the camera that is right for you.

  9. I agonized over what camera to buy last year. I read lots of websites and reviews. I didn't like the Rebel because it's so heavy.

I'm sure you'll find the perfect one for you!
