When It's Time to Step Back

Did you ever feel like giving up blogging?
Do you go through dry spells and can't find the mojo?
Or do you feel like it's taking over your life - can't remember your husband's name, perhaps?

I read an article last week at The SITS Girls about bloggers who have to take a break from - or quit altogether - blogging. It was very interesting to me because ...

I've "quit" several times over the past 18 months since I began
Ms. Redo. Discouragement or feeling overwhelmed by life.
But things would get better for a few weeks and I continued.

Either way, I didn't want to stop visiting my favorite bloggers who have become like friends. I care about them and what's going on in their corner of the world.

The SITS article talked about balancing life and blogging. And how sometimes life either takes over or needs to be given a priority.

Becca from Blue Cricket Design was interviewed. Her blog had become so successful, she was spending 30 hours a week answering emails, talking with sponsors, preparing, photographing, and writing posts. She had little time or energy left for her young family. So she stepped back from it all and regrouped.

I recently talked to Brenda at Cozy Little House, asking if she'd ever thought of quitting. "Absolutely not," was basically her reply. Brenda loves to write and loves photography, and she's super talented at both. However, she did give me some ideas for times when you just can't find the mojo:

1.  Focus on the photos.
2. Tell a story from your childhood.
3. Use poetry or famous quotes.

These three tips helped me keep going, even when August seemed to drag on into endless heat and boredom. And before I knew it, September arrived and I was excited about fall and the colors and, so many other things going on!

Like everything in life, sometimes you just have to
keep going until things begin to look up.

And sometimes, you just have to step back.

This weekend, I made the decision to step back
from blogging. It just feels right at this time because
I feel overwhelmed by life.

Homeschooling my two teens.
Driving them to church, sports, and social events.
Cooking, cleaning, planning, organizing.
Working on my uncle's estate account.
And feeling completely overwhelmed.

What about you - did you ever think of quitting?
If so, how did you find your way through it to keep going?

I'll miss sharing with you, dear friends,
but I will be around to visit you often.
And who knows, Ms. Redo may show up
in your reader again sometime.

Thanks for all you've taught me -
decor
gardening
recipes
crafting
sewing projects
and so much more.
Thank you.

Hugs ~ Mary

  1. Oh POOH, It is so much a part of my day for many reasons! I blog while I am drinking my morning coffee and late in the evening while watching TV. My elderly Sister looks forward to seeing what I am up to! She doesn't get out much and some days I blog just for her:) I totally understand needing to step back! My Daughter used to blog and just doesn't have the time with four kids in school and sports! You take the time you need and I hope to see you here again! BIG HUGS and prayers from my heart to yours!

  2. It's so funny for me to read your blog this morning and find someone with the same thoughts I have. I've only blogged about 2 days in the last month and I've been blogging for about 5 years now. I've felt like I'm giving up doing things with local friends, sewing, knitting, baking, just to write another blog. I'm still searching for where I want my blog to go. Maybe you could just take a break? I never wanted my blog to feel like work but it was beginning to. I'm retired and I don't want a full-time job again with no pay. Yes, having friends on the Internet is fun but not like talking to someone in person and having a friend to go to lunch with. I know where you are and most of all I want you to be happy. It has been such a great pleasure to get to know you. Hugs and prayers.

  3. I find my own balance... I love blogging but sometimes it is overwhelming and I fall into a blog funk, I think we all do. I post and read when I have the time. No stress. Sometimes I lose followers and sometimes I gain them.. I have learned not to let the blogs become a chore.. because when that happens, blogging is no longer fun! Blogging does keep me motivated to enjoy life.. make the little moments matter!
I hope to see you soon. Enjoy your bloggy break... but come back!! Lol. We r gonna miss you.

  4. I honestly don't give it a lot of thought. I don't think I've ever thought of stopping but I never worry about what to post or how often, either. I blog if I feel like it and if I don't- I don't!

It was definitely more fun and exciting when I first started 5 years ago but new things always are-right? I've never tried to get followers or sponsors or worried about comments- unless there are NO comments. Ha-ha! Then I first wonder if there is something wrong with me and then I suspect blogger. :) I once commented on my own post because no else did. :)

I do love to write, design and photograph the things I love and I love the social interaction since I live way out here in farm country but I've never felt obligated to do those things. I knew one blogger who quit blogging because it took her all day to reply to every comment and visit every blogger who visited her! What!? Who says you have to do that?! I think I'd quit blogging, too! Ha-ha! Life is full of enough duties without making more for ourselves. For me, blogging should be fun!

Anyway, I say quit if you don't think you'll ever post again but if you think you might, just lay low with no pressure.

    Hope I don't sound too preachy. :)

  5. Your blog is for you to decide what you want to do. If you want to stop or take a break then you should. You will be missed. Good luck, you have alot on your plate. Home schooling has to be time consuming.

  6. Oh, Mary. You know I understand completely - and I don't have all those things to do that you do. I miss blogging - just thought this morning that I had really wanted to write a post about my dad on his birthday. But I am back to reading books - which I didn't have time for when I was reading and commenting on so many blogs. I'm clearing out stuff that I bought because of blogging influences - and never used! I'm just not that kind of crafty. I'll keep up with you on FB and email, I hope.
By the way, I love that picture of the flowers. Wow. Your pictures are so good.
    Take care, Friend.

  7. It is different for a single woman like me, and Brenda, compared to you. But in a little over a year you have gained a huge following. What are you discouraged about?? That I don't get. I also never bought into the "post every single day" routine. THAT is what zaps you. I for one do enjoy the visiting and commenting much more than my posting, but I would feel like a stalker if I didn't blog, and I do like the repertoire. But then again, I am free to do as I want when I want. Just lay low and when the urge to post hits, post! If not, don't!! It really is simple!!! xo

  9. I almost quit once, but I took at little break and returned with renewed interest. You are a wonderful friend to so many people. We will all miss you if you should stop blogging. I suggest that you take a bit of a break. Get caught up with your obligations and take some of the self imposed pressure off. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming. There will be lots of fun things to post about and you may just find yourself itching to jump back in. Everyone deserves and needs a vacation. Take one and see how you feel after a break. I for one will be waiting.

    Big Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

  10. I only spend an hour or two a day on the blog it's cheaper than the phone and you can read stuff about people who you would never meet in normal life, I have not long been on it but my children use other ways to keep in touch twitter is a bit hard to follow and facebook is more for family and friends that don't live close by.

  13. Hi Mary,
I hate to see you quit blogging. I hope that after taking a bit of a break, you will come back to it, as you feel you can. Don't feel like you have to, but I hope you do. I will miss you. Take care.

  14. Oh, I'm sorry to hear you are stepping away - I have enjoyed popping over to see what you are redo-ing. I have thought about quitting my blog once or twice, but only once seriously. I find my blogging mojo ebbs and flows much like my scrapping mojo - thankfully it always comes back. Take care till our paths cross again.

  15. Hi, Mary!
I have enjoyed your blog and sincerely hope that you can rest up and do the things with your family that are so important. That is one blog that flies by quickly and before you know it, they are gone....You will have plenty of time to blog down the road. God Bless you always!

  16. Hi Mary,
Blogging can be consuming. I know when I started blogging 2 years ago I had no idea it would develop into such an enjoyable pastime....but ..I have thought about limiting my time on the computer.Everyday life and family have to take priority over fun.
I'll miss you and your blog....I looked forward to joining you.
God Bless you and your family

  17. I find it can be all consuming if you allow it to be. Finding balance has been my best approach to staying in the blogging world. I try to post every other day instead of daily, and never turn my computer on at night, as I am online all day long at the Shoppe. It helps to keep it all in line. Unfortunately, blogging is also a very competitive venue, or we made it that way, so everyone feels the need to keep up. Blog for the pure joy of sharing. I don't compete, I don't worry about what everyone else is doing.....it helps me to stay focused and enjoy blogging.

  18. Such an interesting post, Mary. I can see how sometimes with a busy family life there just wouldn't be the time to devote to blogging and I can understand why you would need to step back. I hope when the time is right you'll return. There is only so much you can put your energies into at a time. Take care, and I hope to see you here again one day :)

  19. Eventhough I've only been blogging for 6 months I can totally relate to what you are feeling. At times it has just taken over and I've found it hard to find a balance. Taking a break for even a week has helped and also dropping some of the things that were causing stress, like too many link parties. I still haven't found the perfect balance but I'm working on it. Family really does need to come first and I totally respect your decision. I only just discovered your blog today but I truly hope you will be back to blogging when it feels right again!

    Best wishes,

    Lynn

    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)
