Frugal Eye Glasses

Sunday night while practicing for the church teen musical, another girl accidentally whacked Elizabeth (there are movements with the music) on the side of Elizabeth's glasses. Boom!
One nose piece broken off .

Elizabeth has learned a lot about frugality from me but I have to tell you, she takes it to a whole 'nother level.

Since the glasses could not be repaired, Elizabeth selected a pair of frames she liked, and the optometrist's assistant said the
total cost was over $400
We walked out and Elizabeth was steaming. "I'm not paying that for a pair of glasses!"

Well, since I knew I was actually the one paying, I decided to go along with her on this ride. First stop, Walmart, where she found a pair of frames very like the other pair - $60 (rounded figures).
We bought them.

Next stop, For Eyes, where we learned they could make the lenses for the glasses we'd bought at Walmart - total cost of lenses, $70.

So Elizabeth's new glasses cost @ $140.

Total saved = $260.

Of course I'm still steaming because I had my eye exam that first day at the optometrist's for $176, and later learned I could have had it done at Walmart for $70.

Lesson learned!

  1. You were lucky and shopping around paid off. I have to go to an ophthatmologist at me age and it is costly.

  4. Isn't that something? what a savings. I think everything 'eye glasses' and dentistry is just out of the ball park! How wonderful that she is already a thrifty. In this day and age for a young girl to be that way is fabulous!
    Be a sweetie,
