I made it through the first 20 days of 2013 without buying anything unnecessary, but then blew it with a Mickey D's sweet tea on 1/21. I'm still watching my money very carefully.
Meanwhile, I worked hard for the last two weeks to save money on my grocery shopping at Kroger. There are four of us in the family - my kids are 16 and 13 and eat like adults, so let's say four adults.
. I shopped on Tuesday for the 5% senior discount.
. I used $14 in manufacturers coupons. And learned that Kroger no longer allows double couponing.
. I bought the store sale items, stocking up.
In all, I saved $60. And that's really good for me.
However I still spent $250, and I didn't feel so good about that.
But when I shopped last week, again on Tuesday and using coupons on sale items, I only spent $100 for our weekly groceries ... because I had stocked up. That averages $175 each week, which is a huge savings over the $225-250 I normally spend per week.
And we still have food to prepare several meals.
Now I'm feeling really good about the $250. I learned you have to start the stockpile and then start the big savings. I'm learning as I go.

Good for you. Yep it is slow to start but once you start stocking that pantry you see you need to pick up less. I just had to buy ink for the printer and feminine things for all the women in this house. How would you like that bill? I can buy by the case.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are doing really well saving money. Thankfully our grocery will double coupons up to a dollar. (e.g., a fifty cent coupon is the largest one to double). This really helps. The main grocery in our area is Ingles. They do lots of BOGO. I try to stock up then. My daughter is the coupon pro. She saves tons of money by using coupons. She started her stockpile over a year ago, and is now really saving. She's not one of the extreme couponers like on t.v., but she has it down pat! Good luck saving!
ReplyDeleteHey friend!! I nominated you for a fun blogging award! Would love to have you join in the fun :)

Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteYou're doing great, that was some smart grocery shopping. When my four boys were little I would buy whole chickens by the case and put them in the freezer. I bought everything in bulk! My husband said I could make ANYTHING out of chicken! You are inspiring me to go back to my old ways of shopping and save money! I know I waste to much in the grocery store and that is pure lazy on my part. You are a good inspiration!
And say, I notice that 3 tier stand in your header, I believe I have a red one somewhere in the cabinet that would look good for Valentines day!
Thanks for sharing,have a great week-end,
Dorothy
Mary, sounds like you did all the right things!! Good for you.

I think you are doing great! Anything you can save is a plus!! Yes you have to stock up and then it's easier to just fill in.

Linda
Does your Kroger price match? I think ours does, but I need to check it out. I actually price matched at Walmart using flyers from KMart and Walgreens when I was in Blacksburg this week. (Kroger is my favorite place to shop, but Walmart was more convenient since I was there.)
ReplyDeleteI think you are doing great Mary! I use to cut coupons and really watch my pennies when I had 5 kids at home. It's just me and hubby now but I still try to look for the best bargains. Although I rarely use coupons. I do price match and hubby and I always buy a half of beef and pork which really helps cut down on the grocery bill. Thanks for sharing with Share Your Cup.

Great job Mary! I stocked up on a few things last week at Kroger and another smaller chain grocery store as well. I really have been doing pretty good at "eating out of our pantry" these days. of course it means getting creative but, to save money, I can do that! Thanks for sharing at TTF last week!
